What a pro does

Batteries account for a surprising share of dead displays. Past that, a tech puts a meter on the low-voltage wiring at both ends, since a corroded terminal behind the plate or a nicked conductor in an old wall cavity makes a perfectly good thermostat look dead. Wire count is the other frequent culprit. Older systems in converted homes were run with the minimum conductors anyone needed at the time, and a modern connected thermostat expecting constant power will brown out and reset without that extra wire, which reads as a random, intermittent failure. A thermostat sitting in a draft or in winter sun reports a temperature the rest of the house doesn't share.

It does. A thermostat on a cold outside wall reads lower than the room it's meant to represent, which makes the system overrun.

If the display works, is the thermostat cleared?

Not necessarily. A working screen with a failed switching contact will look completely normal while never closing the circuit that starts the equipment.
